Who Wants To Tour Chez Vienneau?

Come one, come all for a virtual tour of my new house.

This bad boy cost me $637,000 Canadian dollars. It is approximately 4 blocks north of where I'm living now. Which is approximately 4 blocks north of where I lived before (ie, my parent's house). I'm apparently fleeing the nest at a glacial pace of 4 blocks every decade. At this rate, I'm apparently living in Toronto for the rest of my life (and those of my children's children).

(And for those of you not intimately familiar with my current abode, I live at "Yonge and Lawrence". My apologies to those of you from other environs that have no idea what that means.)

In other news, I'm ill - I'm supposed to be resting my voice for the past week as I keep losing it and coughing a lot. This contributed poorly to my Magic tournament results last weekend. I flew to my first tournament in years and years and as I get off the plane my throat starts to itch. Add in two Red Bull each day (they were free!) and the guy that never drinks caffeine is not only sick, he can't fall asleep until 3am. A month of going to tournaments every weekend and practising each night gone to waste!

(And for those of you not intimately familiar with the world of Magic tournaments, if I win one of the many "qualifier" tournaments I get a free trip to Prague and the chance to win $30K!)

Work remains good. My short-term contract was extended for a seventh year and a recent meeting reversed a decision to replace me by 2009. Did I mention I work for the government? They may also find additional funding so I can work five days a week instead of three, which is particularly helpful with that big honkin' mortgage, though it will definitely cut into my Magic practice (see how everything ties in together?)

(And for those of you not intimately familiar with the ongoing saga of my office and the craziness that goes on there, consider yourself lucky!)

I was going to write a big tournament report about my weekend in Richmond, Virginia. I may still, but I suspect I won't. I wasn't feeling well, I made errors that I needed to not make, and I lost. A lot. It sucked. It sucked enough that someone even wrote about how agonized I looked.

I will do what I can to provide update more frequently, but no promises - I have to decide whether to play lots of Magic in the near future or give up the dream again. No dream = lots of writing, lots of free time. Dream = lots of frustration, no time for writing.

And if anyone wants to help me move, I take possession on June 26th! Hmm...I just checked and apparently that's a Monday. So I'll need to move during the week. Boy is *that* going to be a problem. Who wants to skip a day of work and help me move?

Your house is beautiful! And living right by a Starbucks, I can say from experience, is fun. Are you planning on buying new furniture for it or are you going to take your time?

As for moving, I might be around to help.

It's a beautiful house.

And with the wicked backhander...

Although the Ferrett actually put it in a complimentary context as a comment on intensity, this is my favorite quote...

"I'm not a total buffoon in life. If I lose at Magic, I'm still a decent writer, and I make good money editing and programming, and I have one hell of a wife. It's just one aspect of me, and hell, if I lose what does it mean?

To people like Ted and Matt, it means a lot."

That's good stuff...

How convenient that your move-in date is suddenly when I'm back in town instead of the week I'm at that conference! Unfortunately on Mondays during the summer I've got all that...uh...stuff...that I...do...on Monday...

Luckily I'll be moving all week long, so no matter what your schedule is, you'll still have a chance to come out and celebrate! I'm thinking of forming a bucket brigade to move the 100+ plants all four blocks so we'll need lots of people...

Congratulations!

But I have to ask, is the US the only country that has done away with the radiator (I noticed one in the bedroom)?

The house was built in the 1920s when radiators were in vogue. Since then a lot of people have upgraded the heating to forced air, especially if they can add air-conditioning at the same time.

In this case the air conditioning was added as a totally separate system (which is apparently much more expensive to do, but generally better) so there was no need to replace the rads. As I've lived mostly in old houses and apartments (1950s and earlier) I've always had rads. But all new houses used vents.

My apartment just had all the rads replaced by vents (an endless 8-month process that I'm still fighting with them about) and as I sit here typing, listening to the windstorm that is the primary vent into my living room, I long for the quiet radiators (though to be fair, they were often equally loud, but they were also in horrible condition).

phew! for a second there I was worried there wouldn't be room for spider plants! But there's two whole bedrooms, plus a basement apartment!

I trust you're taking them with you, or has the Armoire convinced you to get rid of them?

it's lovely, congrats. :)

It's a topic of dispute. And logistics - how to move all 100 without damaging them is a tricky question with no immediate answer!

I've been giving them away as gifts! At which point the recipients seem to have a tendency to murder them...

And yes, I practice infanticide when it comes to Spider Plant babies - it's the only way to prevent overpopulation (and keep visitors)
