You would be surprised at how often the 6 degrees of separation can work in ones favour. I myself live in Canada and when I heard about Nicole going missing, although I only knew her indirectly, I was able to contact many people I knew that could help, even though I myself could not go and hunt her down.
Wouldn't you ask ANYONE to help?? You never know who might be "secretly Syrian".
More people will be able to identify with Matt's dilemma of losing a sister, rather than actually being lost. Not many people are as adventurous as Nicole. People will help if they can feel the pain... whatever Nicole is going through is something we cannot fathom, but I can fathom what Matt is going through and I am faced with myself when I do. If it was my brother lost, I would want all the help I can get.
Stop looking for assholes in heroes. It is unnerving.
