Hi Matt,

It's true that most of the tourists going in Syria hire taxi driver or take bus, but not all of them. We are Canadians and we went in Syria in April (just a week after you lost the trace of your sister); we rented a car and driving was really easy. We were not the only crazy ones to do so: I checked on traveler's forum before going and lots of people where recommanding car rental. Also, one of the newest available guide of Syria, published by Bradt (british editing house) is recommanding car rental to travelers. So... it may worth checking, because they are not so much car rental company. You should check in Aleppo and Damascus.

I remember when I was in Syria in the late 90s, I wanted to take a taxi to Salimiyya and waved one down. The driver insisted I stop off to meet his mother. I was reluctant but it was hard to say no so I ended up visiting the mother. I never got to Salimiyya because by the time that was done, it was too late in the day.
