Oh, forgot to mention that the name I am searching for is Jessy Alexander, a Canadian.

And, in case it helps anyone thinking of doing the same, here is what I have posted in some online forums and such (feel free to copy and repurpose!):

We are seeking to locate Jessy Alexander who stayed in the Riad Hotel in Hama, Syria on or about April 1, 2007. Born in Canada in 1980, resides in Canada, holds a Canadian passport.

This is in relation to a missing persons case in Syria. Jessy stayed at the same hotel as Nicole Vienneau, the woman who has gone missing. Her family is anxious to speak with people she may have met in her travels, especially on the day she was last seen.

This is exactly the sort of assistance and plan that we need and will likely work best. Pick a person, do your best to find them. People in your own country (or who at least speak your language) are likely the easiest.

And letting us know about the false hits (such as the facebook person with the same name) is good as it helps us not bother the same people repeatedly.

Thank you for doing this.

You are most welcome Matt.

And, Unbelievable, I found him within 24 hours! (I've emailed you Matt).

All I did was post that message to the Craigslist "Missing Connections" boards in all the major cities across Canada, and on Lonely Planet's Thorntree. (I also did some other searching, but hit dead ends). Took an hour or two last night, and when I got home tonight, I had an email from the person I was looking for.

Next I am going to search for Jacqueline Vinoi.

btw, to others who feel helpless here... doing this has helped me feel like I actually AM able to help. I hope my success here will encourage others to do the same ;-)

Great detective skills Roberta.
Just to let you know that Nicole's first name is jacqueline, (her middle name is nicole) and the hotel staff transcribed her family name of vienneau incorrectly as vinoi. So your comment "Next I am going to search for Jacqueline Vinoi" is either a superb joke or you missed this point about names being incorrectly transcribe from the Arabic sound of the names when the guests checked in.

Thought I'd write this so you can move onto another name - your detective ability is too good to waste.

Oh!! Thank you!!

The reason I picked the name is because it's listed on one of the hotel lists, and I was focusing my attention on Canadians first.

I'm honestly a little embarrassed, because I thought the name seemed familiar. Sigh. That would be because I remember now that I had read that detail earlier on. LOL. At least I didn't start digging yet.

Hey Matt, perhaps you could remove Nicole's name from the Cairo hotel list, so no one else makes the same mistake ;-)

Another thing that would help is if the hotel guests who have already been located are removed from the list (if they aren't already), or marked as 'found'.

I'm updating the list as I type this. I will also correct spellings that seem wrong.

The updated list should be posted tonight, in an effort to spread responsibility around, all the uploading is handled by my girlfriend who is out for the day.

I had left Nicole's name in as an example of how names can be twisted in translation, but I'll remove it now.

Amazing stuff! I've emailed the person you've found. Fantastic work.

I think we want to concentrate on finding the people at the Cairo Hotel who arrived before Nicole disappeared. It's a shrinking list, and most of them reside in Syria, so it's going to be tricky. We need an Italian and French speaker to post on the equivalent Craigs list and so on!

I emailed a few international schools in Syria hoping that they would look at the hotel lists. Got an answer from the international school in Aleppo saying that all the international schools are on summer break at present. Will continue looking at school or ESL sites but think it's a dead-end at present; anyway it will keep the search in the front of people's minds I hope.

Does anyone have other ideas what kind of jobs foreigners would be doing in Syria - that necessitates staying in cheaper hotels like The Cairo and The Riad hotels? I'm a teacher, so on a pretty low salary, therefore understand staying at these places - and did stay at The Cairo in mid-March. At that time the other guests I spoke to were university students, recent university graduates, students in Damascus studying Arabic, people doing lengthy round-the-world style trips, and retired people.

Could you send me a list of the schools you contacted? I have a volunteer doing some additional checks and I don't want to duplicate work if I can avoid it.

I appreciate your efforts to find Nicole with the emails, it really helps.
