Also for the Lu family, it is very common for Chinese or Taiwanese immigrants to give themselves "nicknames" with American spellings, however these nicknames would not be included on any legal documents. Is it not possible to find them through their passport numbers?

It is written in arabic as Mardis Faxson (not Fukse at all)! There is no letter V in arabic (they substitute it by F in foreign names), and the letter shapes is such that Mardis could be Maryse (marees) for example. Here are other suggestions:

Maryse Vexon, Vaxon, Faxon, Vackson,etc.

Mardis could also be Meredith as they pronounce the th like s in Syria. So Meredith Vaxon, etc...

I did a search for "Markus Fuchs syria" and came up with a german archaelogist teaching in Beirut who has written about Syria:

http://www.uni-bayreuth.de/departments/geomorph/docs/Geoarchaeology_Intro.pdf

there is an email address posted in that article.
