January 10, 2010 update

Hi Matt,

I've been following Nicole's story since you first posted the details to reddit a few weeks after she first disappeared.

In your last update you posted: "We traced the number to a South African phone number, which is a bit off the radar for where she might be."

I'm not sure if you are aware or not but South Africa is the location for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. If Nicole was kidnapped and sold to a human trafficking/prostitution ring it's quite conceivable that they could have moved her to South Africa in anticipation of the World Cup.

I'm sure you've done more to verify this latest "lead" than you have posted, but if not, don't write it off as another scam too quickly.

Re: January 10, 2010 update

Hi Derek,

I happened to have just re-read the transcript of the final conversation between my mother and "Mike". Needless to say, it's very clear that he was a scam artist. One day I may post more information, but for now we want to keep our techniques for detecting extortionists to ourselves so that it's easier to catch them.

Re: January 10, 2010 update

Ya, I was sure after all this time, and with the experience you have unfortunately gained in detecting scammers, that you would be %110 sure before you dismissed it.

I can't imagine the stress you and your family have endured the last two years. Whenever I come back to visit your blog I always do it with the hope that you will have posted that she has miraculously been found alive and well.

Hopefully, some day you will have closure on this sad story.
